KCN Regio Limburg — 40 years

Some weekends are built around cars.

Others are built around everything that happens because of them.

In May 2026, Keverclub Nederland Regio Limburg celebrated its 40th anniversary at Schutterspark in Brunssum. Four decades of meetings, friendships, road trips, breakdowns, late nights, early mornings and one shared love for aircooled Volkswagens.

For IDLE, it was the kind of weekend we love to capture.

Not because everything was perfect.

Because it felt real.

The moment you entered Schutterspark, you could hear it before you properly saw it. The unmistakable sound of aircooled engines moving between the trees. Beetles, buses, Karmann Ghias and everything in between slowly finding their place for the weekend.

Some had travelled only a few kilometres.

Others had been on the road for hours.

But once they arrived, that difference disappeared.

Forty years doesn't happen by accident.

A club doesn't exist for four decades because of a logo, a name or a yearly meeting.

It survives because people keep showing up.

People who spend weeks preparing the grounds. People who arrive with their Volkswagen packed full of camping gear. People who have been part of the club for decades and people visiting for the very first time.

And somewhere in between those two groups, the story continues.

That could be felt everywhere throughout the weekend.

Old friends finding each other again.

People sitting in camping chairs beside their cars for hours.

Someone lifting an engine lid and suddenly having five people standing around it.

Stories from meetings that happened long before some of us were even part of the scene.

And, of course, the question that appears at almost every aircooled gathering:

"Did you drive it here?"

Usually followed by a story that takes at least twenty minutes to tell.

More than rows of Volkswagens.

From behind the camera, it's easy to focus on the obvious things.

The cars. The details. The polished wheels catching the light. The old paint. The stickers from journeys made years ago.

But when you stay around long enough, you start noticing something else.

A meeting like this isn't really about what is parked on the field.

It's about what happens around it.

Coffee being poured early in the morning while the campsite slowly wakes up. People walking around with a piece of Limburgse vlaai in one hand and a camera in the other. Children looking inside Beetles their parents probably grew up with. Owners explaining tiny details of their car to complete strangers. Conversations starting with a Volkswagen and ending somewhere completely different.

Those are the moments that can't be scheduled.

And those are exactly the moments IDLE looks for.

40 years of aircooled friendship.

There couldn't really have been a better description for the weekend.

Because forty years is bigger than a single anniversary.

It means generations of people have passed through this club. Cars have changed owners. Projects have been finished, sold and started all over again.

People who once arrived as visitors became members. Members became organisers.

And memories that once happened around a campsite are now stories being told to someone experiencing their first meeting.

That is how a scene survives.

Not by keeping everything exactly the same.

But by giving the next person a reason to become part of it.

Then evening arrived.

The visitors slowly disappeared. The field became quieter.

But the weekend didn't stop.

Camping chairs moved closer together. Bottles opened. Stories became longer. Somewhere in the distance another engine would suddenly start, immediately causing a few heads to turn.

The cameras don't always capture those moments.

Sometimes they shouldn't.

Some things belong to the people who were there.

And perhaps that's exactly why weekends like this stay with you.

We came to capture a weekend.

Instead, we captured forty years.

Not literally, of course. No photograph can show every meeting that came before this one. No video can contain every person who helped build KCN Regio Limburg into what it is today.

But for one weekend in May, pieces of those forty years were everywhere.

In the cars. In the conversations. In the old photographs. In people recognising each other from years ago.

And in the next generation walking between the Volkswagens, unknowingly becoming part of the story themselves.

Soon afterwards, Schutterspark became quiet again. The tents disappeared. The Volkswagens went back into garages. People returned home.

And what was a packed field became just another piece of grass between the trees.

But that is exactly why we photograph these weekends.

Because eventually every meeting ends. Every engine sound disappears into the distance. Every campsite gets packed away.

What stays are the stories.

And the memories.
