How I caught the Volkswagen bug

Hi everyone, my name is Michael, I'm 53 years old and I'd like to tell you a little bit about how I caught the Volkswagen bug.

Ever since I was a kid, I've been crazy about Volkswagens, especially the Beetle. I always used to tell my dad that when I grew up and got my driving licence, one day I would have my own Volkswagen Beetle.

None of them were a Beetle

Well, after I got my licence, my dad gave me a Peugeot. I drove that for about six months before buying myself a Ford. That turned out to be a bad buy, haha.

After that, I bought my first Volkswagen, a Golf Mk2. I actually had two of them, including a GTI. And wow, that thing was a little rocket!

Then I had a Golf Mk3, which was also a great car. That thing just wouldn't break down!

But still, none of them were a Beetle. And that was the car I'd always wanted.

Just out of reach

For a long time, owning a Beetle was just out of reach.

Until I had an accident.

Since then, I've been through quite a physical struggle, and to be honest, it's something I still have to deal with every single day.

When I received my compensation, I decided to finally start looking for an air-cooled Volkswagen.

I spent about three years searching, scrolling through adverts and learning everything I could about them.

Then I came across Buddy

And then I came across Buddy.

My modified 1972 Beetle.

Buddy from the side and rear, with stickers covering the rear side window and a surfboard on the roof rack, parked on yellow and red circuit run-off under a grey sky.

I fell in love straight away! The colour, the looks, the whole appearance of the car. It was exactly what I liked.

So I contacted the seller immediately, went to have a good look at him, took him for a test drive and bought him!

Part of the family

And now, nine years later, Buddy is still with us. He's actually become part of the family.

Because of Buddy, we've met so many lovely people over the years. People who have the same passion for air-cooled Volkswagens as we do. And some of those people have become really good friends of ours.

We go on nice little drives together, visit all kinds of events and everywhere we go, Buddy gets plenty of attention. People looking, smiling, giving us thumbs-up and 🤙🏻 signs.

Buddy parked under a covered walkway, wearing a windscreen cover with big painted cartoon eyes, with a suitcase, a surfboard and a pink flamingo toy on the roof rack.

And that's what makes it all so special to me.

One thing I know for sure, Buddy and I are going to make a lot more beautiful memories together!

Thanks for letting me share

Thanks for letting me share my story with you all.

And hopefully, after reading this, some of you might catch a little bit of that Volkswagen Beetle bug too!

Greetings,

Michael & Buddy
